Not Knowing HOW… and being okay with that

woman looking out windowLet me know in the comments below if this sounds familiar:

Last week you were in a magical place that felt somewhere in between 2013 and 2014 and everything and anything was possible there. And it was so much fun and exciting to be in that place and see the possibilities!

And then you were suddenly dropped squarely into 2014.

And all those possibilities are suddenly feeling drowned by the day in and day out of your everyday life. You already had full days, there’s no more time for new things, no matter how fun and exciting they (or their outcomes) are.

Does any of that feel familiar?

I truly believe that there’s a magic to dreaming what our business and our lives can be. We tap into something bigger than us. Something that takes us gently by the hand, lifts a curtain over a doorway we didn’t know was there, and allows us to peek through. While patting us gently on the back and whispering into our ear “it’s totally possible for you.” Then we’re given a hug and that person with the twinkling, knowing eyes leaves us. And we’re left with a wonderful vision that we know is possible. And we don’t know the HOW.

*THUD*

It’s that HOW that sometimes gets me. I love knowing HOW. It’s comforting to know the steps. I want to get from A to B and this is the map that will get me there in 3 steps and 2 hours. LOVE that.

And the vision, that dream of what can be, of what will be, is different.

We’re left to determine the HOW by ourselves. Sometimes it might feel impossible, at other times daunting and then there’s those really wonderful and cool times where it feels completely possible – no, even better than that, it feels like REALITY.

As someone who LOVES to plan, being okay with not knowing the HOW is uncomfortable and often just plain frustrating.

Knowing the next one or two steps I need to take IS actually enough and I’m slowly learning to be okay with that.

Does that mean that I’m not planning or making decisions? Of course I’m still planning! I know what my next big project is and I have rough estimates of dates and time reserved to map out exactly what I want to happen and want to do to make it a reality.

AND I’m okay with not knowing what’s coming immediately after that.

I prefer to look at it this way: so much more will be opened to me in the coming months, new opportunities and directions, that I’d be doing my self a disservice by limiting myself to my current view.

I don’t know what the future holds. And for the first time in a long while, I’m okay with that.

And the path there, it’s going to be so much fun!

Reviewing 2013 and Defining 2014

Last week’s topic was about what worked and didn’t work last year and the habits that you want to create this year.

This week, I encourage you to review 2013 a little bit more and make 2014 even more successful.

  1. What did you accomplish in 2013 that you are most proud of?
  2. What did you do in 2013 that prior to 2013 was too far outside of your comfort zone to even be a possibility (what did you do that was a bit scary but really worth it)?
  3. What is one fear, limiting belief or other obstacle that you overcame in 2013?
  4. What, or who, supported you the most in 2013?
  5. If you accomplish nothing else in 2014, what one thing do you want to accomplish that will make you the most proud?
  6. What’s one thing that is a bit outside your comfort zone that you will accomplish this year?
  7. One is one fear, limiting belief or other obstacle that is hindering your success that you will overcome this year?
  8. What is one thing that you will do that will support you (and your success) in 2014?

Year In Review and Creating Habits

It’s almost the end of 2013. In this time between Christmas and New Year’s day I tend to automatically start reviewing the past year.

Something that I’ve noticed is extremely important for me (and my clients) are habits. Habits are something that support or hinder (depending on the habit), our goals.

So, I was thinking about some of the things that did and didn’t work this year and created an exercise that I’m planning on spending some time with.

Basically, it’s reviewing what did and didn’t work. Why it did or didn’t work and what habits supported success, which ones supported the failures or which habits will support future successes based on past lessons.

Here’s the details:

  1. What didn’t work?
    1. Write down what didn’t work this year or what fell short of your expectations.
    2. What lead to that?
    3. What are some habits that you might want to change or create as a result?
  2. What did work?
    1. Write down what did work this year or what went beyond your expectations.
    2. What lead to that?
    3. What are the habits that helped support that success?
  3. Review the habits you wrote down.
  4. Pick a habit or two that you will commit to creating over the next 20 to 60 days.

What Are Your Traditions?

Journaling_at_DeskDo you have any traditions in your personal life?

I’m sure you do. Whether it’s how you spend Christmas, birthdays or what dish Aunt Sally brings to family get-togethers, we all have traditions.

Do you make time for those traditions? Probably. You reserve a day or afternoon to see your family and celebrate that milestone or holiday. You spend time preparing whatever dish you’re going to bring or cleaning the house.

You think about it in advance. You plan for it.

What are the traditions you have in your business? You probably have them, whether you realize it or not.

Some traditions are imposed on us, think taxes.

Some we do accidentally, perhaps taking a mental break during December.

Some we do purposefully, maybe you set goals for the new year.

And some might just be by association, the networking group you go to every month does a grab bag every December.

Some are helpful, the goals.

Some might be renewing, taking a mental break.

And some might be frustrating because they’re imposed and we aren’t prepared when they arrive, filing taxes.

What traditions do you have in your business? What traditions would you like to have or would you like to (and can) break?

December And Your Business

December is supposed to be a time of relaxation, reflection and family. That’s how I generally see it portrayed. While at the same time, we’re being encouraged to get out there and buy extravagant gifts for the ones we love, donate extra time and/or money to worthy causes, host parties for friends and family and still stay on top of work and other commitments already in place.

I don’t know about you, but sometimes December can wear me out!

So, some days all I really want to do is get a little extra sleep or curl up on the couch with a cup of something warm, light a fire and read a good book. Full confession, I have done the extra sleep thing (don’t forget to take care of yourself!).

However, there are still things to do in, on and for my business. Priorities might change in December (or at other times) and that’s okay.  If you want December to have another focus than your business, that’s fine! Do it with intention though.

To help you focus, whether you’re going full throttle in December or not, what are the one or two things that you most want to complete this week? The things that if nothing else is accomplished, will make you feel like progress was made?
