The Motivation Myth

Earlier this week I had a thought that I summed up by writing this in my notebook “motivation vs making it easy.”

I wondered how much of what we do (or don’t do) – or what “successful” people do (or don’t do) isn’t so much a matter of motivation as it is about making the things that need to get done as easy as possible to do.

This lead to me thinking about motivation in general and how often we substitute “wanting to” or “being inspired” with motivation.

Many other rabbit holes of thoughts were explored.

How many projects/goals are too many?

I came across something today that made me think about how I structure what projects I work on.

Because sometimes there are soooo many things I want to do. Programs to take and to run, things to learn and try, ideas to explore, and people to see.

And I want to do everything NOW.

But is it a good idea to work on 10 projects at once?

Let’s talk about that.

When you can’t think your way through a decision

An interesting thing happened last week.

I was given the opportunity to join a challenge that from the outside looked like it would be fun and motivating.

But, it freaked me out and made me anxious.

I spent a bit of time avoiding it completely.

Until I realized I was avoiding other things in my business because I was avoiding thinking about that challenge.

So, I decided to reach out to the person leading it and exclude myself from the challenge.

And was then surprised by how much better I felt. It really did feel like a weight was lifted from my shoulders.

Let me be clear: this challenge is a great idea and for those that have chosen to participate, I’m sure they’re getting a lot out of it.

It wasn’t for me.

And in the past, I might have tried to push through it to prove something to myself.

I was reminded that one part of productivity is knowing what to say yes to, and what to say no to.

How do you make that decision?

And when are you saying no out of fear or “playing small” versus saying no because it’s really not for you?

Let’s talk about that.

Do you know what your next 4 weeks look like?

Some weeks I start this newsletter with a story that then develops into the topic for the Wednesday LIVE (and I didn’t know the topic until I wrote the story).

Other weeks, I have a topic in mind to cover and no story that nicely leads into it.

This is one of those weeks with no story introduction 🙂

Instead, it’s just an introduction to the topic.

Four weeks from today April will be over and it will be May.

What do you want those four weeks to look like?

Are there things you want to accomplish?

Or maybe there’s a tone you want to set and maintain?

Let’s go over that in this week’s LIVE.

How to avoid the temptation of bright and shiny objects

The other weekend I was doing some filing (into my file cabinet instead of the pile of “to be filed” that had accumulated) and realized I was stuffing paper into already full folders in a drawer that was also pretty full.

So, I decided it was time to pull the older files out and move them to the big file cabinet in the basement.

As I went through the things that I wanted/needed to keep (old taxes and bills), I realized I also had some miscellaneous folders in there labeled things like “to read” and “programs.”

Basically, they were articles, freebies, and workbooks I had printed out for reference over 2 to 4 years ago. I filed them because “I might want them later.”

I laughed at that as I looked through and saw some articles and training on social media I had saved (how useful will that really be 2+ years later?).

Ultimately I decided to recycle everything in those folders.

As I was thinking about what tomorrow’s Wednesday LIVE with Evie was going to be, I thought of this experience and realized I was information hoarding things that had been shiny objects (aka convenient distractions).

Have you ever found yourself chasing bright and shiny objects instead of doing the work that actually needs to be done?

In the video I share:

  • 2 ways to stop the chase in its tracks
  • the evidence (piles of it) I found of my previous bright and shiny object chasing
